This is a compendium of all the film polls I could find, most by critics but some by the public.. the stuff you mentioned that didn't make it, like Gunga Din and Sgt York, didn't get listed by either of these groups or they'd be on here. I agree, those two titles at least, were pretty lame films.. the Longest Day was somewhat better, but watered down its content by giving cameo roles to every Hollywood celeb who was in town, apprently, or how does Peter Lawford get a part? I have it on my list of recommended war films, but the polls don't agree with that choice either..

I'm surprised that Key Largo didn't make this list - in fact, it made NO polls and it's not even among the 2285 films on my master list. Go figure, that one is baffling.

At least most of the silent films they included are bona fide classics, like Sunrise, The General, Battleship Potemkin, Man With the Movie Camera, and Metropolis. No one can argue those choices.

as always, "your results may vary". These aren't my favorites either.. where is Seven Days in May? The Train?

Mr. Sinclair you are right where is Seven Days in May? I however like Logest Day as well. I am a huge Fan of most film made before 1990. I do like your list here and the work you put into it I thank you for. Their are films I would not put on my private list and many I would add. Did I miss the 39 Steps, Cape Fear and Night of The Living Dead? Long list if they are there great if why not? But, as they say we like what we like and we don't like what we don't like. Once more thanks for this list.

When I create my own personal top 1000, it will include many of these that the polls overlooked: Seven Days in May, The Longest Day, 39 Steps, My Favorite Wife are all deserving bw films. The problem with public polls (IMDB) is the public - they rank garbage like Sergio Leone westerns above bona fide classics. Also they overlook older films that the new generation hasn't seen, who will often cite the last film they saw just b/c it's recent, like The Hangover (argh!)

As for "anonymous" (too chicken to enter their name!) let's see your top 100 bw films that doesn't include films from here, if this list is "useless". Love it that you say 'too many foreign films', as if only films in English are worthy. I believe bigotry is defined as "not liking someone due to religion, race, culture, or educational background" (look it up)

Hia!
I'm hoping I might pick someone's brains on a movie that I am trying to re-find.

I only saw part of it, but I think it was pretty good. The main actor's nickname was Jonny (or Johnny) but I can't remember her real name. She was living with a smuggler that told her he was divorced but really wasn't. (He also owned a ship named the Calypso).
When Jonny discovers this, she loses interest in him and in anger, speeds away from his house and narrowly avoids driving off a cliff. Seeking help with her teetering car, she walks to the nearest house and stumbles onto a surprise birthday party hosted by a man named Pierre. She falls in love with Peirre who is a potter and they have lots of fun.

At the same time, an employee of the smuggler breaks into his safe and idiotically steals Johnny's diamond bracelet to pay his debt to the smuggler. Upon receiving the bracelet back in payment, he assumes Johnny gave the bracelet to him and threatens her life over the non- existent love triangle. She accepts the violence because she believes he has discovered Pierre and he is right.
Sorry that's all I have. But help would be appreciated.

Thanks

No Schindler's List?

José Sinclair said...

Good catch Rubio- Schindler's List was #30 overall, should be #17 here, so I'll have to renumber the list after that but will definitely insert it.. I'll fix it in word and bring it back in..

thanks!- Jose

re Metropolis ahead of Samurai.. I wouldn't but since this is a compendium of all polls I could find, the others polled agree that Samurai is best.. they are both art, but for me Samurai is also more epic, more artistically filmed, and had more impact on futures films - Kurosawa himself admired the westerns of John Ford, and I think that Kurosawa then had major impact on western actions films, certainly those of Peckinpah, and probably war films as well, who adapted the close up in your face style of the battle in the rain and mud that climaxes Samurai.. I don't see anything filmed that is influenced by Metropolis, perhaps it's influence waned in earlier decades - but it's still creative and rewarding today - I might move it down a little on this list but it's all personal - I read and saw much better SF, so I have to see it relative to that - hard for me 50-70 years later to put it in 1926 perspective and don't think I have to..-
-thanks!
- Jose

AY - that film is THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR, in which Ginger Rogers plays a 12 yr old in order to get half fare on a train ticket b/c she doesn't have enough $ to get all the way home otherwise.. I think she was tired of NYC and wanted to get home to somewhere midwest, like Nebraska.. funny movie, but a bit pushing the bounds of propriety since Ray Milland actually thinks she's 12 and lets her stay in his sleeper car! - but it's written and directed by BILLY WILDER! so there you are.. he was nominated for 20 Oscars and won 6, 3 for screenwriting

We managed to create it through the total comedy movies, and it absolutely was exhausting. Doing improv well is already a burdensome expertise. that is why ninety eight % of improv comedy is terrible.
