Top Ranked fantasy films from our internet film survey. As you can tell, many of these cross at least two genres, as Wizard of Oz was also the #1 ranked musical, but who could argue that it's major appeal is its creation of a unique and popular fantasy world, one where everyone serves "the great and powerful wizard of oz", who is really an American huckster using illusion and intimidation to control others - some things never change!

To These I Would Add
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T [Rowland, Roy, 1952] - wonderful kids fantasy of an evil piano teacher, co-written by Dr. Seuss
Defending Your Life [Brooks, Albert, 1991] - afterlife fantasy of Brooks', where he meets Meryl Streep, while on trial for a 'final judgment' with shoddy defense lawyer Rip Torn - hilarious!
I would never have seen 8½ as a fantasy flick. Glad to see Big Fish there. Wouldn't animated films count as a fantasy? Almost all I can think of seem like fantasy to me...
ReplyDeleteYep - it's a tough genre to exactly define. There are enough fantasy elements in 8 1/2 that I included it, plus I let IMDB decide many of the genre choices - sometimes they have up to 5-6 per film.
ReplyDeleteI guess since I had animated by themselves, I left most off this list.. most were lower ranked anyway. I think my idea is to rank similar films together..
Glad you like Big Fish - I think its Burton's best, I love it.
PS - note that next to 8 1/2 it's main genre is "drama"
